The increasing popularity of machine-readable "matrix barcodes" (two-dimensional codes) - QR codes - is apparent also in the CAD industry. QR code can carry any text information (job number, contact information, web links, PLM links) up to about 2.000 characters. By placing such code in your drawing you can simplify and automate further processing, indexing and circulation of the drawing - either in its paper form or in an electronically published form. A scanned QR code is readable by many software applications, including applications on mobile devices equipped with a camera (iPhone, Android Smartphone).

QR code

To generate a QR code from a given text you can use the .NET add-on application CADstudio ImgConvert and its command IMGQRCODE. This command prompts for a text string and then places a QR code (represented in native AutoCAD entities) in your drawing. You can download and try the addon application ImgConvert from DL Download. Load the application DLL file into AutoCAD with the NETLOAD command.

A sample DWG drawing with embedded QR code can be found in the Block catalog - QRcode-test

Another option is the LISP application ARKANCE QRcode for dynamic QR codes - see Download.
