Q - question

Entering decimal values using fractions in CAD applications.

A - answer Most CAD applications allow to enter numeric decimal values (e.g. lengths) also in an alternative way - by a fraction, i.e. instead of "3.125" to enter "3 1/8". This 'inch-like' method of specifying dimensions can be used even in metric projects. Let's show this data entry method in AutoCAD, Inventor, Fusion 360 or Revit.

In AutoCAD, you can type lengths or other dimensions using fractions (slashes) or arithmetic expressions (see and see and see). You have to delimit the integer and fractional part of the typed-in value with a dash (minus) - e.g. 3-1/8 or 1-5/8 - see:

In Inventor, you can enter the dimension directly using a fraction form - e.g. 3 1/8 - see:

In Fusion 360, you can also enter the dimension directly using a fraction form - e.g. 3 1/8 - see:

In Revit, you can use fractions only to enter imperial units/values (even in metric projects) - e.g. 3'1/8". You can also enter dimensions as mathematic expressions - see.
