How to convert an assembly to a multi-body part and vice-versa?

An Inventor assembly file (IAM) can be easily converted to a single multi-body part (a part with multiple volumes, multibody). And vice-versa, a part file (IPT) with multiple bodies can be converted to an assembly (IAM) with the original bodies represented as separate IPT parts.

Assembly -> Multi-body part

Use File > Export > CAD Format to save your assembly as a .SAT format file.
Open this same .SAT file directly (e.g. by mouse-dragging to the Inventor window) and in the dialog "Create new" choose the option "Multi-body part":
Save the multi-body .IPT file

Multi-body part -> Assembly

In the multi-body part choose the function Manage > Make Components in the ribbon - this will launch the conversion wizard
In the dialog "Make Components: Select" select the bodies (volumes) you want to convert to an assembly
In the dialog "Make Components: Bodies" enter the component names (names of the future IPT part files) and other conversion parameters, then click Apply.
Save the resulting .IAM assembly including the separate .IPT files.
