If you want to automatically turn on (or off) the NumLock key (the NumLock function light) after logging in Windows - i.e. get access to numeric keys on the num pad, you can use the following Registry settings.

Run REGEDIT an in the tree HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard set the key InitialKeyboardIndicators to 2.

If you want to enable NumLock even before you log into Windows XP or Vista, perform this setting in the registry tree HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard.

Other options for setting this Registry key (sum values):

  • 0 - all keys off
  • 1 - Caps Lock on
  • 2 - Num Lock on
  • 4 - Scroll Lock on
  • 2147483648 - honor your BIOS setting (Vista only)
