Check the setting of both PICKFIRST and while you are at it PICKADD as well.  They should both be set to "1".

PICKADD and PICKFIRST should always be set to a value of 1.

What program are we actually talking about?

What else have you tried thus far?  No sense suggesting things you have already tried.

Have you tried a REPAIR of the installation?

the program im using is (autodesk autocad 2000)No i have not tried (repair), How does that work. im one of thoes " if it does not work i call my IT guy. he knows nothing about this program! i have used acad for years starting with R14,acad2000, acad 2006 lt,now Draftsight. Im not to smart when it does not work!!

The REPAIR option will require that you have the original installation media.  Do you still have the CD?
