Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

I am student of a secondary higher technical college in Austria, who was assigned to research something of the usability of AutoCAD. Now I am not proficient in any CAD-Software so I figured it would be best to ask people who know their stuff.

What are the things that make AutoCAD so userable? What are functionalities that you miss when using other 3D-Modeling software?

I hope you can help me :)

Hello AkiraSatou, for me AutoCAD is the best for it being universal, simple to use and reliable.
When working in 3D you will have to know where you are going because the 3D models are not so easy to modify and dimensionning ( "parametric" only in 2D ).
AutoCAD 3D is good for topometric survey, not limited in distances unlike others and can give you informations like X,Y,Z coordinates, real angles, etc...
There are a lot of things that you can do like finding the center of gravity, weight, inertias, etc...
With some experience you can also "open" rolled or bended sheets for "flat" metal sheet.
With a good computer you can open other softwares like Solidworks, Pro-Engineer, etc... and have files up to 180 Mb without too much problems.
Your files can be opened on that softwares and can be used or lightly modified.
I won't be able to answer till 09.08.2016 ( Urlaub ).

AutoCAD is versatile.  It can be used for any number of disciplines such as architectural, structural, electrical, civil, sanitary, industrial, etc.

AutoCAD can be customized to suit a user's needs via macros, lisp, .NET and VBA (depending on the version).

AutoCAD can be used to create 2D and 3D drawings.

Orthographic 2D views can be extracted from 3D models via several different methods.

AutoCAD is one of the most popular CAD programs in the world and the number of installed seats probably reaches into the millions.

Students and educators can download a three year license to use AutoCAD for free from the AutoDesk educational community website.

Only if you know what you are doing.  Otherwise a good program does not necessarily mean a good drawing.  You should see some of the "drawings" I've received over the years.  The authors should have taken up another career like accounting or dishwasher.
