Slide135

Virtual reality is an artificial world consisting of images and sounds created by a computer that is affected by the actions of a person experiencing it. Most first-person video games are examples of virtual reality. Augmented reality is an enhanced version of reality created by the use of technology to overlay digital information on an image of something being viewed through a device such as a camera on a smartphone. Pokemon Go is an example of augmented reality. The Pokemons appear on a phone screen on top of the real world that the phone's camera is viewing. What separates augmented reality from virtual reality is the inclusion of the real, physical world in the environment being experienced. Can virtual reality and augmented reality be used for something more significant than gaming? Some interns decided to find out.

Here's a video that features two virtual reality design applications developed in Autodesk Stingray by interns in Autodesk’s office of the CTO over the summer of 2016. Now that virtual reality has emerged in the mass markets with high-quality consumer hardware, what software will need to be created to supplement new hardware experiences? These demos explore applications and interfaces in design and world building for room-scale VR experiences with HTC's Vive.
