I have autoCAD 2005 but it will not open the dwg files that I have downloaded from this site.
can anyone help?

If you are talking about the DWG blocks from the Catalog - they are in various versions of the DWG file format. The autodetected version of the uploaded blocks is displayed in the gray box next to the thumbnail.
 
If you need to downgrade the DWG file version you can use the Conversion functionality in the free DWG tool - Autodesk DWG TrueView 2008 (see the Download page here).
