When I pick the Properties Icon the Properties box does not show in the top lefthand corner of the screen (it has shown before), therfore I think I have switched something off, can anyone help.

If Ctrl+1 does not show the Properties palette, it may be have been dragged off-screen.
Try to increase the screen resolution or see the tip:
