Is it at all possible to open an Inventor file using Auto
CAD?
 
Might there at least be a viewer?  Ermm

You can open Inventor DWG drawing files with AutoCAD (and keep them associative with the model), not IPT.

There is a free "Inventor View" viewer - see the Download page, Viewers:
