My model/layout tabs have dissappeared in autocad 2008. I go into option and turned them on and they now show above the comand line, like they did in previous version. Originally, they displayed in the status bar below the command line. It was my understanding that when you closed the tabs above the command line, they would automatically display in the status bar. Does anyone know how to make the Model/layout tabs to show up as buttons in the status bar?

Click on the small down-arrow on the bottom statusbar and in the list check the option Layout/Model. This will show the buttons.

Thanks, that solved it. The trick was to turn off the model tabs that are above the command line before you click the arrow. Otherwise the list will show that the buttons are active already.
