Why does it take so long for the system to even think about hatching let alone do it?????
#It seems to hang and then when you think its not going to do it it starts!

turning off associative hatching might speed it up.
CAD2011 seems to have it on as default.
type hatch then settings.

turn off the hatch-preview
command HPQUICKPREVIEW.
or/and
don't use the ribbon:
set HPDLGMODE to 1

Thanks everyone - it worked a treat no more going and making a cup of tea whilst I wait for hatching to load!
