I used AutoCAD for several years, then switched to SolidWorks and was good at both, but don't think there is much use for SolidWorks here.

I am considering attempting to get a job using AutoCAD here in Wichita.  I assume AutoCAD has changed quite a bit since 98, but am thinking the basics are the same.  Have been going through an AutoCAD 2006 tutorial online and find it quite easy--am usually a jump or two ahead of the instructor.  What do you think?  Should I go for it?

Yes, the basics are the same, but the program interface has changed pretty drastically and there are lots of new commands and features, a totally revamped 3D environment, etc. But as long as you know the basics, you can learn all the new features as you go. Get yourself a book, work through online tutorials and ask questions in the Autocad forums. It shouldn't take long for you to get up to speed.

You should get back into it pretty quickly and once you learn the new tools you'll probably find it's a lot easier than it used to be.
I'm back with 2009 now, but have used newer versions in the past and found the express tools helpful

If you haven't already found it, you can download a Free Trial version of AutoCAD 2011 here: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=123112&id=13779351

Good Luck!!
