Okay, so pardon the dumn-xxx new-to-ACAD question.

I am working from an architects drawings for a complete building and need to create drawings for various sections of the building.  I know this is likely easily accomplished but I have no idea how to do this.

I am working in AutoCAD2011

Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you working in 2D or 3D?

How much architectural drafting experience do you have?

I'm working in 2D.

These are drawings which I'm simply dropping blocks into for the purpose of marking voice/data/automation/AudioVisual systems.

We do lots of this work however we're normally working in software by "StarDraw" or "Visio".  Generally we convert CADs back & forth between the software however what is being asked of me is something that is not easily done in the software I'm familiar with.

My CAD Guru is not available, my experience with ACAD is quite limited.

Getting blocks into an AutoCAD drawing should be a fairly straightforward process.  Use the INSERT command.

Do you have a specific layer set up for these symbols yet?  I think it might be a wise thing to do.  The ability to isolate this layer at some point might be beneficial to someone down the road.  Just a suggestion.

Thanks for you help, I just re-read my original post an realized I did not do a great job of explaining what I am actualy asking...

So I am being more clear, I have been given a plan in CAD for a 2 story building with 10 tenants. The architect wants me to extract each of the 10 tenant spaces off this single plan and create AV drawings for each of the 10 tenants; so each tenant has it's own page.

The arcitect has not created this level of detail and has not plans to, they advised me... that they pretty much stop with the overall building structure plan and let the interior designers, and other consultants create the tenant space plans & details which go beyond a wall, door or window.

I see you are using AutoCAD 2011.  Does the architect's drawing make use of Layouts?

Yes; I have kind of also tinckered with this by creating new layouts from the model... just not sure I understand how to do anything other than make the layout display anything other than the whole plan with whatever is showing in the model.

The architect is working on 2007 - 2010

What you need to do is assign a scale to the viewport.  After assigning the scale go into model space through the viewport and using the pan command set up the view you need for a particular room.  Once you have it go back into your layout and resize the viewport using the grips if needed.  Finally, I would recommend clicking on the viewport and look in your Properties for the feature "Display locked".  Change this from 'No' to 'Yes'.  This will ensure your viewport scale will not be inadvertently changed.

Note: Make sure your viewports are on a layer of their own and in the Layer Properties Manager set this layer to "No print".
