We get a lot of files from architects built in Architectural Desktop (which we don't use).  Our work is done as 2D files.  If we explode the elements in the ADT file (in order to manipulate them) we lose details such as doors and windows etc.  Is there a way to convert those elements to 2D in AutoCad 2008 or does it have to be converted by the architect before he ships me the file?

The best way is to explode the AEC objects in the source application (ADT). There is the "Export to AutoCAD" command which does exactly this.

You can also install the AEC object enabler for your AutoCAD to see the AEC objects (doors, windows, stairs...) comming from ADT. See Download.
