Does anyone remember Cadkey? An old 3D wireframe drawing program that (together with SolidWorks) seems to have ruined me for 3D AutoCAD for life. Maybe the functionality I'm looking for has evolved and I'm missing it....

I have to do some wireframe modeling for a structural analysis program at a new job, so, while the structures are complex, the modeling is quite primitive.

Here's what I'd like to do:

In Cadkey I could draw on a "construction plane" in 2D.  All my snaps, extend's, and new objects would be drawn from the current view perspective, at a depth I could set, and relate to the objects on other planes as though they were projected onto my construction plane.  I could also trim lines on any other plane to their apparent intersection with objects on the construction plane.

The construction plane could be set to a depth from one of the standard views, or simply set using three 3D points.

Without this, I feel severely handicapped to do the obvious.  I'm not sure where to look for these tools, if they exist.

Any clues much appreciated!

I remember CadKey but never used it.

I'd do the drawing entirely in 3D solids and view it in a 2Dwireframe visual style.
