IS THERE A WAY TO CHOOSE WHICH WAY AND AT WHAT POINT YOU SWEEP THE OBJECT  ALONG THE PATH

Sweep will sometimes give unexpected results.  One must try all the Sweep options before giving up such as Guides for instance.
