I am having trouble finding a control for the default leader arrow head size in Autocad 2012 LT. The size keeps defaulting back to small on closure of drawing. I can't see a system variable for it.
Anyone any ideas?

Isn't that governed by the setting for arrow size in your dimension style?

A: Yes.  It is.

The "Standard" (which is a cruel joke Autodesk has been playing on neophyte users since the dawn of time) styles provided with AutoCAD OOTB (out of the box) will produce miniscule text, leaders, dimensions, and tables, and is NOT meant for actual usage.  As is they are mostly less than useless.  They are simply there for users to utilize as a basis for their own custom Text, Dim, MLeader, and Table style definitions.
