I am in AutoCAD 2012 and when ever i go to make a selection the frame of all my blocks and xreferences comes up.  What is the setting to turn off the outter frame?  thanks

This may have to do with *how* you're making the selection(s).

If you use a left crossing window everything you touch will be selected.  This will include any underlays or xrefs.

If you use a regular window only those items completely inside the window will be selected.  Unless you completely surround an xref it will not be included in the selection.

If you use a fence, the results will be similar to a left crossing window where everything the fence touches will be selected.

Study your references with respect to making selections.  I have a strong hunch your answer is there.

thank you for your response but this is not the answer.  i know the difference between left and right box click.  the block borders are selected regardless and they are all over the screen.  in addition, when i am opening a file the preview shows the all borders to all the xreferences.  this happened when i downloaded the new version and it is certainly a setting in my options but i dont know which one..

once more thing, when i click outside of the lines that are drawn, like in "space" the borders of these blocks and xreferences are selected.  This did not happen before in my last version so i believe it is a setting.

If you create a wholly new drawing with a couple of blocks and example xrefs, will the same thing happen?  Or is this just occurring in one particular file?

FRAME and XCLIPFRAME are two system variables that are stored with the drawing file.  You might check their settings in a pair of files that work/don't work properly for you.

You might also want to AUDIT the drawings that don't act properly and see if AutoCAD finds any problems there.
