Is there a trick to inserting areals into AutoCAD 2013 to where they will come in to scale and at the correct location? I was trying to avoid purchasing AutoCAD Map if possible.

The "trick" is that they ideally need to be (1) orthographic, and (2) geo-referenced.  And you need to know the scale.  Odds are you won't have this information so you'll need to do the alignment and scaling on your own.
