A couple of possibilities:

1.  It's not really an X, but the beginning of an Xref placeholder for an Xref that's not available.  Zoom out to see whether there are more characters.  Does the Block contain any Xrefs?

2.  It's a Point entity in the Block, with the PDMODE System Variable set to 3, which displays Points with an X.  Its size would be determined by the PDSIZE System Variable setting.  Set PDMODE to 0 to have it displayed only as a Point.
