   Hi,

I have recently started using AutoCAD2014 and have gone through a few tutorials. I have got my head around the basics and had done a drawing of some framework. I then placed this into a view port on the paper space and dimensioned it there.
I needed to move the view port to have more space for another drawing and the dimensions I placed do not move with the model. I used dimensions set to annotative and object snap was used (I would have thought that ACAD would at least link the dimension to the line, thus becoming the child of the parent line).

I have seen that people recommend dimensioning in model space, but the tutorial package I have been following recommends doing it in paper space. As far as I understand it, dimensioning in model space means that any other views of the same model will carry dimensions you may not want in other view ports of the the same model.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

	Annotative scaling is recommended when your dimensions and text are going to be model space. You do not use annotative scaling if they are going to be in your paper space layout. Re: dimensions in paper space. Your dimensions need to be "associative" which is not the same as annotative. And if you are going to move your viewport you should also select the dimensions and move everything at one time not separately.

	Thanks for the quick response. I have used Solidworks for quite a while and am just used to dimensions being linked more intuitively. But I was sure I was doing something wrong - thanks for clarifying it.

	Why would you switch from an advanced MCAD program like Solidworks to something as primitive as AutoCAD? Seems like you are going backwards.
