Q - question

Materials missing after import of FBX file into 3ds Max.

A - answer When you import a Revit 2011 FBX file into 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design 2010, the model geometry is imported properly but the materials (Autodesk materials or ProMaterials) are missing and all objects display with a gray standard material.

Use the same version of the renderer for this workflow - 3ds Max 2011 uses a compatible material library and it loads a Revit 2011 FBX file without problems.
