Q - question

Autodesk applications problem with Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

A - answer After you apply SP4 for Windows 2000 or hotfix 823980 you cannot open Autodesk VIZ or VIZ Render or gmax files (.max, .drf, .gmax) anymore!
Until a fix is published you can use the following workarounds:
  • uninstall SP4 from Windows 2000, or hotfix 823980
  • merge your file into an empty scene
  • open your file on a Windows XP system

Less fatal errors can appear also in Autodesk Inventor (working with projects) and in AutoCAD 2004 and LT 2004 (script errors in help).

these problems can arise also only after installing MS security update (hotfix) 823980 in Windows 2000, or even in WinXP or NT4

A temporary fix: call Microsoft and request the Hotfix - Q824136.

A final fix: update your system automatically using the 'MS Windows Update' service or follow the instructions in the MS Security Bulletin 03-039.
