Q - question

3D osnaps to planes in point clouds.

A - answer One of the new features in AutoCAD 2015 is the 3D object snapping to planes and plane perpendiculars detected in attached point clouds. So you can automatically place a block (e.g. a sconce) perpendicularily to the virtual plane of a wall captured with laser scanning.

These osnap modes can be controlled in the "Drafting Settings" dialog, on the tab "3D Object Snap", in the pane "Point cloud". You can select snapping to Node, Perpendicular, or Nearest to plane. The point cloud must be processed in Autodesk ReCap.

See also the command 3DOSNAP and the variable 3DOSMODE. You can also control the osnap by typing the keyword of the specific 3D osnap mode on any coordinate prompt: PNOD (node), PNEA (plane), PPER (perpedincular). These new "cloud" modes enhance the existing keywords for 3D osnaps: ZNON (nothing), ZVER (vertex), ZMID (edge modpoint), ZCEN (plane center), ZKNO (curve/surface knot), ZPER (perpendicular to plane), ZNEA (nearest).
