Q - question

Automatic checking of design limits in Inventor.

A - answer Since many versions back (R11), Inventor and Inventor LT contain a useful function for automatic checking of design limits in parametric models - AutoLimits.

If your ribbon (Inspect > AutoLimits) does not show the AutoLimits tab, check loading of the module "Automatic Limits" in the dialog Tools > Options > Add-ins:

With the AutoLimits function, you can add a number check-functions (points) to your model. These points will automatically watch any exceeding of the user preset limits - either geometrical (length, distance, angle, diamater, minimum distance, area, perimeter, volume), or physical (mass).

E.g. in this model, the limit-checks were added for lowest- and highest-possibler mass (the center point) and limits for radius on the leading edge of the propeller blade:

If you exceed these limts by editing the model parameters or geometry, the AutoLimits function will warn you by displaying a warning (yellow) or critical (red) icon.

The limits for the warning and alert range can be customized (in percentage or in absolute +/- values). You can also suppress displaying specific states (e.g. hide the "OK" status):

So you can easily check minimum required offset in assembly parts, impending collisions, electrical cross-talks, maximum mass or other design or manufacturing parameters in your models.
