How to replace a 3D mesh model with a grid structure?

Using the tools in Autodesk Meshmixer you can convert the surface of a mesh model to a structure of pentagonal and hexagonal cells (Voronoi cells) - a mesh formed by thin pipes of a given thickness and smoothness. The resulting grid mesh can be then e.g. printed on a 3D printer or exported back to a CAD software application.

Meshmixer allows to import any 3D models - e.g. from Fusion 360, AutoCAD, Inventor, 3ds Max - supported formats are: STL, OBJ, PLY, AMF, 3MF, OFF and MIX.

Another option of converting a 3D construction to a structure (with different principle) is the AutoCAD add-on application 3DConstruct.
