If you run Inventor (or other Autodesk application) on a workstation with two graphics cards (e.g. an integrated Intel and a graphics accelerator nVidia), the first launch may lead to a crash of Inventor (or AutoCAD, ReCap, Alias, Revit etc.). Typically, the error "Autodesk component has stopped working" (when verifying the license) or "Reading 0x0020 Exception" will appear on notebooks (mobile workstations) equipped with integrated Intel graphics, plus nVidia GeForce GT540M or nVidia GeForce GT550M (or Quadro K1000m, K2000m, K4000m). In AutoCAD, it may also cause the splash screen hanging with the message "Loading plug-ins... AcVMTools.crx".
This can be solved by setting the right graphics.
Fist install the latest versions of Windows graphics drivers for your Intel and nVidia chips
Right-click on the Inventor icon (or other CAD app) on your desktop and choose "Run with graphics processor" > Integrated graphics or try vice-versa the option: High preformance nVidia GPU.
If you cannot see such menu item, enable it first in "NVIDIA Control panel" - menu Desktop > Add the option "Run with graphics processor" to your context menu (resp. Desktop > Add "Run with graphics processor").
You can also try to add your CAD application to program settings in the nVidia Control Panel. Here you can force it to use the nVidia graphics card instead of Autodetect and also change the OpenGL rendering GPU setting to force the nVidia card rather than Autodetect.
Run Inventor (or other CAD) from the desktop icon
Set the customer involvement program options
Close Inventor/AutoCAD
After this, Inventor/AutoCAD will launch without errors and it will use the original default graphics card.
It may be solved just by upgrading the nVidia driver to the version 320.86 or higher.
In Windows 8.1 you can also try Control Panels > Programs > Run programs made for previous versions of Windows and set the wizard options.
Other CAD applications (e.g. Catia V5) may suffer the same problem.
