Q - question

Lasso - new method for selecting objects in AutoCAD 2015.

A - answer AutoCAD 2015 introduces a new option for object selection - "lasso". Selecting objects by drawing a freehand boundary curve (similar to raster editors or Fusion 360) can be activated by pressing and holding the left mouse button and dragging along the requested boundary. Similarly to selecting with a rectangular window, dragging to the left invokes crossing selection, dragging to the right invokes full enclosing (the whole object must be caught in the lasso). Both modes can be toggled by pressing the spacebar during dragging (do not depress the mouse button). A second spacebar press switches to the Fence mode - will select objects intersected by a freehand curve you draw by dragging.

You can influence the lasso mode behaviour by a couple of undocumented variables. The environment (not system) variables LassoTimeTrigger, LassoDistanceTrigger and LassoTimeThreshold preset the triggers for the lasso mode and its parameters. You can set the variables with the LISP function (setenv) or with the command SETENV (in AutoCAD LT).

  • LassoTimeTrigger - e.g. (setenv "LassoTimeTrigger" "666") - primary timer for the lasso mode, by default 500 ms
  • LassoDistanceTrigger - e.g. (setenv "LassoDistanceTrigger" "32") - number of pixels you drag your mouse to invoke the lasso mode, by default 16 pixels (increase when you need to use small rectangular selection windows)
  • LassoTimeThreshold - e.g. (setenv "LassoTimeThreshold" "300") - minimum mouse-press time to invoke the lasso mode, by default 100 ms

(the variable names are case-sensitive)
