Maximum number of layers in a DWG file.

Current versions of AutoCAD support max. 32767 layers in a single DWG file (the definition of the DWG file format has no specified limit for the number of layers). You can see a sample DWG drawing Layers32767.dwg in the Block catalog. When you create a new layer in it, AutoCAD 2011 and 2012 will crash. AutoCAD 2010 has a higher limit of layers (depends on available RAM, each new layer takes about 15 bytes in the DWG file).

You can xref another copy of such drawing, so the total number of layers in a session is not limited by this maximum.

You would rarely need such number of layers for real-life drawings.
