Q - question

Autodesk Map and AutoCAD support for compressed TIFF format images.

A - answer The AutoCAD Map's MAPIINSERT (Map>Image>Insert...) command (or Insert>Image in AutoCAD, _IMAGE) supports only some of the compression schemes available in TIFF raster file format and doesn't support the CMYK color scheme. The following table lists the TIF V6/6.0 subformats (for monochrome .tif files) and their support in Autodesk Map 3D 2005/2006 and AutoCAD 2005/2006 (and 2007 and higher):

FormatFile Size (sample)Autodesk Support
Uncompressed TIFF1.082.018 bytesYES, full
Uncompressed multipage TIFF2.164.036 bytesPartial, only first page
ZIP-compressed TIFF180.678 bytesno (displays as 'gray noise'); YES since A2007
RLE-compressed TIFF (Huffman)158.330 bytesYES, full
Packbits-compressed TIFF317.262 bytesYES, full
LZW-compressed TIFF195.794 bytesno (US version only*); YES since A2007
JPG-compressed TIFF3.719.647 bytesno (displays as 'color noise'); YES since A2007
CCITT3-compressed TIFF (1Dim, Group 3 Fax)160.938 bytesYES, full
CCITT3-compressed TIFF (2Dim, Group 3 Fax)132.719 bytesno; YES since A2007
CCITT4-compressed TIFF (Group 4 Fax)92.632 bytesYES, full
16-bit grayscale TIFF196.632 bytesNo, some yes, since 2012
48-bit color TIFF329.632 bytesNo

NOTE: For the US versions installed from network deployment: copy the files ielzwdec80.dll and egifrd80.dll from AutoCAD CD '\ACADFeui\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared' to the 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared' folder.

You may also consider using ECW or SID compressed raster file formats in Map and higher AutoCAD versions. For raster file format conversion (incl. batch conversion) you can use e.g. the IrfanView freeware viewer (www.irfanview.com).
