Q - question

Quickly make a Revit wall semi-transparent.

A - answer If you want to quickly "peek in" a closed space by suppressing a wall, or otherwise need to make a building element temporarily transparent, you don't need to complicately change (override) its display style or visibility.

Just pick the wall. Revit makes a selected element semi-transparent by default. This option can be suppressed in Options > Graphics > Color > Selection > Semi-transparent.
