Q - question

Three methods of adding line lengths in AutoCAD.

A - answer The following video illustrates 3 different methods which can be used to find the total length of selected curves (lines) in an AutoCAD or an AutoCAD LT DWG drawing.

  1. FIELD - the dynamic total (sum) of the Length properties from the individual objects (automatically updated on any subsequent change of their geometry)
  2. QUICKCALC (Ctrl+8) - the sum of measured distances picked in your drawing - an AutoCAD QuickCalc functionality
  3. ADDLEN (full AutoCAD only) - the fastest way to get the total length, especially for larger number of line objects, or when adding lengths by layers - using the freeware LISP utility AddLen - see Download and the related tip 7005
(in AutoCAD LT with the add-on utillity LT Extension you can use a similar function "Report lengths")
