Display full version of the post: changing layer colours
I have downloaded a map as a dwg file. All buildings show as red. I need to change this and planned to just change the layer colour. However, alll the layers are coloured green and won't change to anything, but all show up red.How do I regain control of layer colour? (2007)cheers.
Select all the lines, open your Properties palette and change the layer color to ByLayer.
Thanks, but it didn't work. I'd tried it already. They still show as green in the layer box but red in model and paper space. I wonder if its a 'read only' file?
Yep, its a read only file. So how do I change that so I can alter it?I've decompressed the original download, and I can alter layer colours but they still show as green. I have copied it into my dwg into paper space and I can delete lines and save the changes, but can't change the visual colour.any ideas?smudger2011-05-05 17:20:13

To change the attribute on a read-only file can be done from a DOS command line or from within Windows Explorer I believe.
Maybe try exploding the geometry that you want to change...it may be defined by block which would explain some things.
An last I knew, you could simply select to open a non-read only version? or copy it local, change it and replace it.
