I have been trying to embed an image in a dwg package ready for return to client. Ifirst tried to OLE a bitmap image (.bmp), then tried a .tif in Raster Design 2009. Raster Design requires a bi-tonal image, so I convert the TIF file, and it becomes useless (white and black blobs). Then I created bitmap image, in Raster Design, and do a save_as .bmp, of the image alone, and I get a great .bmp file. We only have one Raster license, and it is a stand-alone, right now, so I used that machine to make the bitmap file, then tried to ole it in to my dwg, and it beeps at me and tells me to make sure it is on the system registry! I need HELP!!!

You can embed your bitonal raster image inside a DWG using the Raster Design functionality - see the tip:
http://www.cadforum.cz/cadforum_en/qaID.asp?tip=5535
Then you can open such file with just the free Raster Object Enabler (see Download) in any plain AutoCAD. Lossless file formats (BMP/TIF) with the same parameters (resolution, color depth) should give the same appearance.

Thank you for responding, and I understand that I can IEMBED a bitonal image. There is my problem, I don't know how I convert to bitonal!  I made my aerial bitonal, in Raster Design, and it became truly bitonal. It made it look like one of those ink blobs a shrink tests you with! When I try to _insertobj, it throws me into PAINT. Now keep in mind thes are huge aerials (237MB), so when I try to "update client" from PAINT, it fatal error's me out of CAD!!! I would like to IEMBED, but either way, the client wants stand-alone dwgs from now on, so if you have no suggestions on how to do the bitonal thing, hopefully you can help with the OLE object
Thanks

I dont understand your reasoning for embedding the image at all.  If you do get the image to embed the file size of dwg will jump up incredible will not be usable.

If you are trying to send it to client so it keeps it reference link on there system use eTransmit function in you file menu.  When doing this package the file in new folder or zip, just make sure the option to "Keep files and folders as is" is not selected.  By doing this the aerial image will place in the same folder as dwg file.  When the client opens the dwg it will file the file automaticly and the file will display it correctly.

On the worst case situation, you might need to tell or explain how to repath image back into cad.

Best of luck.

We have a transfer-server (FTP) here, so I can put something like 2 gigs at a time out there for the client to retrieve. The client then archives the returned dwgs. They want them to be stand alone, we uused to e-transmit, but they know we can embed the images, so that is how they want them. It isn't my reasoning your not understanding, I don't have a say in the matter. But thanks for your input!

Hi captcoke,
I am sorry if that came across as rude, I am working long hours, on maybe 3 hours of sleep a day, and getting EXTREMELY frustrated. I apologize, and thank you for trying to help.

Have an awesome day
