Using MDT6 ,  How can metric scaled parts be assembled with inch parts?  Or inch into metric.

Sounds like you would have to do some scaling up or down as the case may be.

Unable to scale assemblies used in multiple products. Problem consists of a metric assembly containing approx 175 parts  with 40 assemblies each containing 4 to 8 individual parts,  Need to merge this with an inches drawing containing a similar number of parts and assemblies. To rescale each of these assemblies would take many hours. There has to be a more universal comand enableing a single profile change to make the conversion.

I don't know of one but you can't be the first person to encounter such a problem.  Have you tried asking your question over at the AutoDesk Discussion Groups?

can you not select everything and scale it appropriately?

hope is not to late but best way is to select right units, by typing "UNITS"then you can insert new objects as let say xref in inches into metric and vvhope that helps

Different templates are used for metric versus imperial based drawings right?

This is how I did in my drawing:It will shown like: <------- MM [INCH"] -------->in Primary Units set "Sale factor" to 25.40in alternate units set "multiplier" to 0.03937and add Duffix with " --- inch signNow, you can draw with inch, but dimensions will shown in MM. Please comment

2111: That's not what he is asking.  dadgill is using Mechanical Desktop 6 which is an AutoCAD vertical product and nothing like AutoCAD LT in its features or the way it functions.
