I need to convert jpeg files into something a can insert and scale in ACAD 2006. Basically I would be receiving the file by email and inserting it into a CAD drawing to use as a stamp or trademark. I have heard about converting jpeg to dxf could anyone elaborate?

You will have to use some other program. You can't convert raster images to vector linework in Autocad.Adobe Illustrator is one program that can convert images to dxf or dwg, but depending on the complexity of your image, you may need to do quite a bit of cleanup work once you get the file back into Autocad. There are other programs that can convert images also, just Google "Raster to Vector" and check the results.But my usual advice, when asked this question, is to just insert the image into Autocad and trace over it.

I checked into various software to convert jpeg to DXF files and there doesn't seem to be a good all around solution for CAD without spending a significant amount of money.
 I tried just changing the file extension of a jpeg but mistakenly typed DWF instead of DXF and strangely it worked! I was able to import the file into CAD and then re-size it using the IMAGECLIP command. Does anyone have any experience using this method? Any input would be great. thanks

JPEG is a raster format - you can use any "vectorization" software (including freeware versions) to convert raster files to DXF, WMF or other vector format readable by AutoCAD. Of course you can also insert (attach), rescale and clip JPEG files in AutoCAD. There is no magic way through renaming file extensions.

Could you suggest a software or two? What do you use? Also what type of file is a DWF? I was able to change the file extension of the jpeg to this and work with it within CAD. Thank you.

Of course it works. I wouldn't suggest it if it didn't work.Sometimes you get logo's or artwork from clients or someone will sketch something up by hand and you need to get it into CAD. In the past I would insert the image into Autocad and trace over it, but now I just use Illustrator to convert the image to vector linework and then export to .dwg.
