Hi,I see that there is already a thread about the best laptop to use for Autocad but I really need to know the minimum specs to run Solidworks too.I know that Solidworks is not a subject on here but I was hoping for a bit of help from you guys and I dont want to go out and waste money on a laptop that wont do the job? For instance, should I get a 64bit so that I can cram the Ram in?Any advice would be appreciated!!

It would be a waste of money to buy a 32-bit computer.Have you visited the Solidworks website to see what their recommended specs are?  Seems like the logical place to start.

Yes...limitations on RAM is something to consider don't you think?  I'm assuming you will want to be doing some serious 3D work or are you going to invest thousands of dollars in software only to do 2D work?  If that's the case save your money and download Draftsight for free.  All it does is 2D and a 32-bit system with 3GB of RAM will be more than sufficient.Bob: Coming up with good search terms isn't rocket science.  You couldn't find a link to the student edition of Solidworks?  All it took to get the link below was searching on two words "solidworks" and "student".  http://www.solidworks.com/sw/education/mechanical-engineering-student-software.htm

Hi John and thank you for chastising me. Believe it or not, I'm not as stupid as my posts make me seem.....just not very imaginative. Apologies, I was told at work that there is no such thing as an educational Solidworks programme. Tomorrow I shall correct him. My own fault for not checking.To clarify, I'm currently doing an evening course in Autocad 2014 but my work uses Solidworks and I am eventually hoping to progress to using that so thought it would be a good idea to, if possible, play around with Solidworks when I have some spare time. Also a friend has offered to help me use SW to show me how to convert surveyors sketches to actual drawings and this is what I asumed I will need a good laptop for.Does this help explain that I'm not stupid and why I asked?

You're covered on both counts.  You would be amazed at the number of people who claim they have "searched everywhere" but couldn't find what they were looking for.  I do a quick search and usually can find the information they claim wasn't available on the first page of the search results list I come up with.  Makes me question they're technique.  Know what I mean?
