This problem has plagued me for the last several years and across multiple computers, and multiple releases of AutoCAD.

What I am experiencing is a frequent and quite irritating pausing of the keyboard and mouse input in AutoCAD. The pauses range anywhere from a half second to 2 seconds, and seem to be completely random. When the problem occurs (5 to 20 times a minute) the crosshairs stop responding to the mouse, and the command line stops responding to keyboard input. However, the mouse movements and keyboard input seem to be buffered, because when the programs becomes responsive again, the crosshairs “jump” to where they would have been if the program had not paused.

My current computer is a homebrew with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad Q6600 with 4GB RAM and an Nvidia Quadro FX 370 graphics running AutoCAD 2010 with Inventor (the problem does NOT occur in Inventor, or any other application).
As mentioned, I’ve experienced this problem on (2) of my previous computers (both laptops, one a Dell) running AutoCAD 2007 LT as well as on this computer running AutoCAD 2007 LT. My current mouse is a Logitech Revolution with the latest version of Setpoint, but I’ve also experienced the problem using my Logitech MX1000 and my Microsoft mouse as well.

Some things I’ve tried in the last couple of days in an effort to solve the issue include: end task on all non-essential processes, disconnected from my network, disabled Symentec Endpoint Protections, turned off hardware acceleration on graphics card. Within AutoCAD, I turned off all visual effects, turned off OSNAP, made the crosshairs smaller, and as a long shot I also changed the LAYERDLGMODE to 0 per this thread: http://discussion.autodesk.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=6137495

I’ve also used Process Explorer to watch processor usage as the problem occurs. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern.

I’ve scoured the internet for any information that may help, but I’ve had no success. I am willing to try nearly anything to solve this problem as it is driving my out of my mind!!!

I had the same problem when I upgraded to AutoCad 2009, maybe 1 year ago.
 
The problem for me was that my graphic driver were not up to date.
 
Run 3dconfig on the command promt and then View Tune Log,
under 3D device, does your machine contain a certified Device?
 
If not go back and check for Updates and follow the instructions from Autodesk.
 
That solved It for me!

I found this on another forum:
 
"Go to the Manual Tune section of 3DCONFIG and hit the 'Reset to Recommended Values' button, which unchecked 'Enable Hardware Acceleration'. That seems to have fixed it. "

Thanks for your help Tobias.

I tried that recommendation. When I clicked "Reset to Recommended Values" it did not uncheck the "Enable hardware acceleration" box, but it did check the "Enable unsupported hardware effects in software when plotting" box. Unfortunately it made no difference in problem that I'm having.

Just for S&G I manually unchecked the "Enable hardware acceleration" box, and that made no difference as well.

Problem solved!

I unchecked the box for "Show Rollover Tool Tips" in the "Display" tab of the "Options" window.

The problem only occurred 3 times throughout the entire day yesterday, which is completely acceptable compared to 5-15 times a minute.

Do you have lots of true type fonts on screen?
