Hello all....
New to forum and I have a noob question. I just started working for a company that makes only one product and when they create shop drawings they draw the project in model space and using several layout tabs they create the required details. So, on each of these layouts they have borders with title blocks. Currently the have to update each layout titleblock by hand for each project.
 
Is there a way to globally update fields in the title block on each layout tab at once, for instance, the clients name, without putting the title block in model space and using vports in the layouts.......
 
any help would be apprecitated.....

You may be stuck editing each one...for example sequential sheet numbering will NOT automatically countdown or up on your title block.

yea,,,,,that stinks. i was wishing for a magic pill for this one. i can update the client name, address, drawn by on one and then copy and paste onto the other layout tabs but again this can be a bit time consuming.....i have created a "field" that puts in the date when i create the new drawing and also the page number is linked to the layout tab....i just cant get the other areas to update....

No, there is a way to do what you're looking to do. It just takes a little ingenuity and thought.I can't tell you exactly how to do it (since I too am still learning how to build mine), but I can give you the two words that will get you started: DYNAMIC BLOCKSGood Luck!!

I had read about sheet sets in the book mastering autocad 2010 and when the chapter starts off saying that sheet sets can be complicated I was a little put off.....but......I am willing to give it a shot...I just had my fingers crossed on a quick and easy way to do this.....Thanks for the input..I really appreciate everyones feedback.

Easiest way to do that is to create a title block as an x-ref. Put all the information on the title block which is the same for all drawings then create block attributes for the text information that changes from sheet to sheet.  This way a lot less work to keep up with....I hope this helps

I agree with msplcdykee69. This is the way we do it. just remember to not use the same xref for multiple projects. if you change it for one client it will change what ever else references that xref. in other words, have a seperate xref for each client.

msplcdykee69 has described the correct method if you have mutliple dwg files with multiple layout tabs within. If you only have one dwg file, you can use a block instead. That block would consist of Text for line items the stay the same throughout the file, i.e. Project Name, Date, Client, etc. For line items that change you would use Attributes, i.e. Sheet No., Sheet Name, Scale, etc The nice part is both the Text and Attributes will never shift locations as long as you use the same origin. Once the block is copied into each Layput Tab, you need only update the text within the block once and it will update all the layouts. Its nice to remeber, Xrefs are for using the same information across muliple files. Blocks are for using the same information within the same file. Xrefs still require a seperate "Title Block Info" Block to be used in conjunction as Attributes do not function within Xrefs. Hope that sheds more light on this topic.

i just finished creating the template files needed when starting new projects. i did just as you and msplcdykee69 suggested. in a seperate file (my xref) i created a border with title block in model space, added the attributes, some as fields that will update the date, page number ect. automaticlly. i then started a new file (.dwt) that will be the main template where the numerous layouts will be and inserted the xref's into each. now when someone starts a new project, they start with the template i created, the xref loads into the template, using the xref manager they open and edit the xref to match current job specs, save and close, then save the newly updated project drawing to its new home, now heres what i am doing to avoid problems, im now going to bind the xref to the project file. this now cuts the link to the original xref. theoretically, the project info wont need changing. the attributes i created as fields will still update when ever i add new sheet layouts (thats cool). this was way more easy than trying to create sheet sets..... i love this forum!!!!
