Hello GPeters, when you are modifying ellipses and splines it's better to use the TRIM and/or EXTEND command if not you may modify the curves themselves.
A direct use of the grips may also modify the curves.

Not sure why you are asking the question if you already know the answer.  Were you expecting a magic workaround?
