What is the basepoint of the one inch random line? 

Are osnaps enabled or disabled when you start to draw the random line? 

What is the original of your UCS relative to the one inch cylinder?  What is the direction of your UCS?

When you attempt to draw the random line what "view" are you using?  For example, are you using a SE isometric view or are you attempting this using a front view?

What exactly are you trying to create?

Hello ruttigerreid, I haven't catch everything but I have read that you want do draw in a random direction.
If you do this in 3D it will lead to a random length ( I suppose ).
Set an UCS in the plan that you want to do that " one inch length" and it will work.
I suppose that the plan in wich you want to draw your "one inch" is not ortho, if it is you can draw in the 3 X or Y or Z directions correctly WITH ORTHO on ( F8 ).

Just having a small issue with sketching in 3D.  So imagine I were to create a 1" tall cylinder, and then I was to draw a 1" line at 90 degrees.  Now I want to draw a line that is about an inch long in a random direction that doesn't lock into polar tracking, say 244 degrees.  For some reason this line isn't drawing relative to the plane of the original line, but instead will draw from the start point at the end of line one, to the UCS plane 1" below, which is where the bottom of the cylinder is. I feel like there is a really basic setting that I switched off at some point in time. I'm super confused by this, and it's frustrating the hell out of me right now.
