Open a new blank drawing in AutoCAD using the metric default template acadiso.dwt.  Switch to a Layout.  Use the Layout Manager to set your plotting parameters such as paper size, etc.  When finished with that start creating your custom title block and border.  Also add in any standard layers, text styles, linetypes, dimension styles, etc. that you would like to have available whenever you start a new drawing.  When completed save the drawing as an AutoCAD Drawing Template (.dwt).  The next time you start a new drawing select your template file as the starting point.  From then on this template will be the default template file whenever you start a new drawing unless you select something different.  Give your template file a unique name such as MyA3Template or whatever.

A4 is the smaller of the two sizes.  If you are printing to A3 then you are scaling the drawing up to fit the paper size.  I don't think that is a good idea.  Make your template to match the size of the paper you are printing to.

Hi John, I will not be making any use for attributes, all I need is how to make the template and be able to use it for my drawings, it made the A4 about 3 years ago, it works fine, but I've forgotten how I made it. I would like to be able to print on A3.

Then as previously suggested you want to create your title block and border in the layout not in model space.

Have you determined what layers you would like to have?  Do NOT put everything on layer "0", color white.

Will you be making use of attributes?

Hello kc13, you can make a template with or without A3.
You can make a template with a A3 inside in the model space or in the layout space by inserting the A3 file that I have uploaded.
If you insert it in the model space you will have to scale it to the scale of your object.
Then you explode it ONE TIME ONLY and have access to a double rectangle of 420 mm x 297 mm.
If you print it of the inside rectangle it will give you a scale 1/1 on you A4/A3 printer.
In your template, draw an example of each layer, dimension style, etc... as it's done in each of the 2 files uploaded.
Save it with the name that you want in the directory that you want and right click on it to do it "read only file".
