Draw a line of maximum dimesnsion you desire. Then use command Zoom- All  or Zoom-Extent. After that you should be able to work fine.

OR
 
As suggested earlier change the limit of drawing and then use command Zoom - All.

you can use the zoom extents icon or you can use Command line> Z return A Return this will zoom you out to show all you have in the drawing. Maybe you should change limits of your drawing.
Have you used Zoom/all command?

I'm running AutoCAD 2007 and I am making a housplan.
