No, you don't need a supercomputer to work in 3D, but if you want to do really complex, high-poly, modeling then you should invest in a machine that's at least above average.

The need for a supercomputer comes into play when you get ready to render. But that's a whole other can of worms.

Hi Everyone ,
 
I'm REALLY new to this . This is sort of a new thread but I'm thinking that I might be talking to other car fans like me so here I am .
 
What sort of computing power is required for some of the 'drawings' that you guys produce ? I was looking at this one particular free download of the Porsche Carrera GT on another site and it looked like it would be , to me , an unbelievably big file and then would require a supercomputer to manipulate . If necessary , I'll find it again so this is a little clearer . Hopefully , u might be able to help somewhat in the meantime .
 
My only experience is just starting out in autocad but I have what could be very lofty ambitions .

What renderer are you using? Mental Ray? Vray? Other?
 
There are lots of tutorials online, just do a Google search.
