Hi
I had the same problem a while ago and solved it with attaching attributes to my blocks then creating a template file in order for the attributes to be extracted (ATTEXT) to excel and a simple VCOUNT command counted all the attributes relating to the specific block  in excel.

It is in 2011. It is not in 2011 LT.

I found this answered by someone for 2007, don't know if anything has changed for 2011...

"Unfortunately with LT you don't have the best tools to accomplishthis. You can't use LISP routines, and you don't have the EnhancedAttribute Editor. Your best bet is to use Quick Select. In the ObjectType specify: Block Reference, and then on properties select the "Name"option , on operator select equals, then on value select the name ofthe block you want Hit OK and it should select all the blocks andreport how many it found on the command line.
