Use AutoGrid. Asalways I appreciate your help! I do realize what your are saying however I wasin the front view trying to create a line that was not displaying when irealized that it was stuck on the xy plan in the top view. I wasn't until Icreated a plane in the left view that it allowed me to make a line in thatview. I run into strange little quirks like this it seems.

If you have your viewport set to "Front" then you are drawing in the XZ plane.

Front view = XZ plane
Top view = XY plane
Left or Right view = YZ plane

Just look at the little icon in the lower left corner of the viewport.
