Base your decision on the following...

What software will push your new computer to the max? Go to the manufacturer's website and read what the MINIMUM recommended specifications are then go beyond that keeping your budget in mind.

64-bit is here and now. Do NOT buy a 32-bit system. I think 128-bit systems are the next new thing but that's to be seen.

At a minimum get a system that utilizes Windows 7. The Premium Home Edition will do although for serious CAD users I recommend the Professional version if your budget allows.

Minimum RAM: 4GB (and the fastest you can afford).

A good mid-level graphics card that is on the AutoDesk "Certified" list.

A LCD wide-screen monitor. 22" is nice...24-28" even better.

John,

One last question. I am considdering upgrading my desktop. Is there a reccommended spec to for Cad that will happily run together with other programs.

Hi,

Thank you. No I have no worries of that. I use an AutoCad lite package in the office. This is a package that I purchased from an AutoCad dealer.

My office consists of 1 person, me. The output is practically nill for the past two years.

Advise note though.

I don't see why it shouldn't but I do have to caution you that AutoDesk takes a dim view of people using an educational product for commercial purposes. Hi,

Yes I opened the drawing in 2012 saved it as 2000dxf. Closed the lot and opened my 2006 version. Called up the drawing and it plotted perfectly.

This is great.

Question should it also plot as dxf in 2012.

I appreciate the help.

Hi, thank you for the prompt reply. It must have been a long day here. It was 2000 dxf.

I am going to open the drawing in 2012 save as 2000dxf.

Close the lot down and open my earlier version of 2006. Then I will try the plot.

I run my own office from my home. Just myself. Little or no work. Hence I decided to upskill in cad. Will let you know how I do with the plotting.

Thank you for the reply. However when saved as Dxf 2002, I have tried to plot it and the preview showed the stamp.
