I am using ACAD  2009 Lte.  Suppose I need to use only the information on a single layer.  Say I want to copy and paste a single layer from one drawing to another.  How can I do this without freezing all but the layer that I want to copy???
thanks  H. Hampton.

Use the QSELECT command.

You can use Filter & Qselect commands. you can also use LAYISO by isolating the layer only.
If you want to copy information on one single layer from one drawing to another, you can use the above commands and just copy them into different drawing. The properties of that layer will only be added in that drawing.
