I am new here. Glad to join the community!
Whenever I have AutoCAD open to read DWG files, it brings the whole system operation to a crawl. Any thoughts why?

What are your system specs?

Is this a standalone or networked workstation?

What is running in the background (ex. - antivirus, MS Office, etc.)?

Is this a new installation?

What OS are you using?

What is the source of the drawings?  Were they produced by an outside firm?

Judging by your lack of response can we assume you fixed the problem or have you decided to chuck being a cad tech and have decided to be an umbrella salesman?
